Step by Step Guide for Great Diagnostic Wax Ups
DUPLICATE MODEL
- In the event you only recieved one model you should duplicate using a pourable polyvinly.
- Pour the model in die stone; brown or beige provides an excllent contrast to the wax.
- Place upper and lower models in base formers.
ARTICULATE AND PREP TEETH
- Prepare teeth with a pear shaped die trimming bur then clean your preps up with a 557 Carbide Bur.
- Be conservative and give your self good finish lines.
- Use a Ultra Thin Disc for the interproximal reduction.
- Articulate models and let dry.
WAX APPLICATION using the *Central Incisor Width Guide
- Start by Placing your Central Incisors first; once the width/lenght is established then the rest of the wax up will fall in place.
- Place the Ivory Wax @ the gingival 1/3 of the Central Incisors, make sure you bring the wax out to full contour @ the gingival as this will serve as your base colour.
- Start forming lobes with the Ivory Wax extending to the incisal edge. Place a thin layer of Ivory Wax over entire prep.
- Begin measuring the width of the Centrals using the built in Central Incisor Guide to make sure they are equal.
- Cover the Ivory Wax with the Snow White to finish out the wax up.
INCISAL EDGES
- Use rounded incisal edges for a more feminine look and sharp incisal edges for a more masculine look.
- Resources are available that illustrate various incisal edges and anterior tooth shapes - most dental teaching institutions have these resources.
- Once the Central Incisors are placed the rest of the Diagnostic Wax Up falls into place easily.
*OCCLUSAL PLANE - Keeping your wax up from running down hill!
- The Occlusal Plane also functions as a straight edge to help keep your wax up from running down hill!
- Once your Central Incisors are placed you can start on the Lateral Incisors - Keep the incisal edges of the laterals lower than the Centrals for a Youthful look.
*INCISAL EDGE FILE
- As you place your teeth in the wax up you may find that the incisal edges are uneven - gently rub the incisal edges against the built in laser etched file to equilibrate the incisal edges.
- The Incisal Edge file works perfectly for the patients looking for that "Movie Star" look with all their incisal edges the same length.
FINAL TOUCH
- As you move from tooth to tooth your wax up begins to take shape.
- Use your favorite carver to add more details and make your line angles more visible. Pay attention to the gingival finish lines for a crisp clean look.
- Duplicate your wax-up using the pourable polyvinly to provide your doctor with a solid model of your wax-up that they can use for fabricating the temporaries.
TIPS:
Remove bubbles before duplicating model.
Use a 50:50 mix of beige/brown die stone and lab stone for easier prepping.
Make sure you find out if the case is for veneers or crowns and prep accordingly.
Spend time making sure the Central Incisors are equal width as this will make your wax-up balanced and more natural.
Use an electric waxing unit that has (2) wands; (1) PKT small & (1) PKT large.
Add Ivory Wax to the incisal 1/3 to create a transluceny effect when combined with the Snow White.
Remember to wax the lingual to proper contours.
Get good seperation interproximally when carving.
Accentuate the lobes and break up the light with horizontal striations.
Gently smooth wax-up with nylon.
Use a cotton tip swab to paint a thin coat of floor wax over wax-up (You may need to repeat for a nice glaze)
